It might sound like a mouthful, but it refers to a naturally occurring mechanism found in bacteria. In simple terms, CRISPR is a part of the bacteria's immune system, which helps them recognize and defend against viruses. Bacteria use CRISPR to "remember" viruses that have attacked them in the past. When a virus invades, the bacteria capture a segment of its DNA and store it in the form of a "spacer" in their own genetic material. If the same virus attacks again, the bacteria can use the stored DNA to recognize and destroy the virus quickly. Scientists harnessed this natural defense system and adapted it to edit genes in other organisms, including humans.
