Vanisha Gupta - Dermatology
Dermatology is one of the most difficult medical fields to match into, yet is it so important because it aims to solve problems within our largest organ. Within our skin, there are many complex conditions that dermatologists unfortunately do not have a solution for. Some of these complicated conditions are becoming increasingly common.
One crucial aspect in the hardships dermatologists face is the lack of funding in research efforts for complex mechanisms behind skin conditions. This limited funding has been shown to slow down the process of research and decrease the amount of studies that can be conducted to find proper solutions.
This is often due to public perception. Dermatology is always on the rise for cosmetic issues, which affects the amount of support for funding initiatives in need for skin diseases.
Another main issue in the field goes back to the competitive aspect of it. Dermatology is regarded to be one of the best medical specialties to go into for the work-life balance of it. Majority of dermatologists only have to work a few days a week while still getting a great pay. Due to this, a lot of aspiring doctors find dermatology to be worth the intensive and long schooling, however, dermatology is incredibly difficult to match into residency for. Every year, more and more medical students are applying for dermatology residency. The match rate for this specialty fluctuates between 65%-75%, which shows that even the most qualified students may not match.
