Understanding Neurological Disorders: The Brain, Nervous System, and Common Disorders

Andreah Falame

Neurology is the branch of study in the medical field that focuses primarily on the brain, spinal cord, and the nervous system. The nervous system is a significant system that controls everything we do. From thinking and feeling to moving and sensing the world around us. The study of neurology is an emerging field that continues to advance in more personalized treatments for patients that are battling neurological disorders.

The field of neurology circles on 3 main parts of the nervous system. Starting off with the brain, the brain is known to be a complex organ that serves to process various information. With its ability to send signals throughout different areas of the body, it leads to the works of the spinal cord. The spinal cord carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. With the help of the nerves, the nerves transmit signals to and from the brain and the spinal cord.

However, with the new knowledge equipped in the field of neurology, we understand that the nervous system can be affected by various diseases and disorders. The list of neurological diseases and disorders can include stroke. A disease that occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or disturbed, which can cause paralysis or speech complications. To add—epilepsy, which involves abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy is known to lead to seizures. Lastly, Alzheimer's disease; a progressive disorder affecting memory and cognitive thinking.  Although, there is an extended list of neurological disorders—those are just to list a few.

Understanding these neurological conditions allows us to acknowledge the brain’s health. An abundance of medical researchers and specialists continuously develop new treatments, and ways to prevent neurological diseases. It is vital to continue raising awareness and supporting research that tackle these complex diseases of the brain.

Neurology plays a significant role in medicine as its study endlessly devotes and dedicates itself to improving lives through groundbreaking, and innovative research towards new treatments of the brain.
