Global Healthcare Issues Related to Pediatric Psychology

                                                  By:  Rokheya Doucoure

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) found that 1 in 5 children had a mental disorder, but only 20% of those children received care from a mental health provider. Pediatric Psychology plays a huge role in helping children and adolescents navigate and overcome these challenges while also promoting a healthier long-term lifestyle. Pediatric psychology is a specialized medical field of psychology which focuses on the mental, cognitive, behavioral health and development of children and adolescents.

Pediatric psychologists support children & adolescents coping with chronic illness, trauma, developmental disorders, emotional challenges and more. One big global healthcare issue related to

Pediatric psychology is the inequalities towards children and adolescents in racial, ethnic, sexual, gender and other minority groups in access to care and disparities in outcomes of mental and behavioral health.

According to the National Library of Medicine, it states, “ Suicide rates are nearly twice as high in Black compared to White boys 5–11 years old and have been increasing disproportionately among adolescent Black girls 12–17 years old”. As these children/adolescents may experience racism and discrimination, they can have immediate and lasting effects on mental health. Access to resources for mental health treatment and more may not be available to the child because of personal stigmas/bias, uneven distribution of resources and also due to poverty.

In conclusion, Pediatric Psychology is a vital part for supporting children’s mental, emotional and social well-being during their developmental years. Every child deserves to benefit and thrive no matter their background.
