Megan Seybold - Pediatrics

There are many issues regarding global healthcare but especially regarding pediatric healthcare. One of the many issues regarding global healthcare issues is climate change. Climate change has severely impacted the well being of children through a domino effect. When climate change affects the environment regarding access to water and food which can lead to droughts, that can cause malnutrition in children. Nearly half of the deaths relating to children under 5 is in regards to undernutrition (UNICEF).

This pie chart shows the leading causes of death in children from 2000-2015 (“Global Progress on Reducing Child Deaths Largely Due to Fewer of Main Infectious Diseases and Deaths During Birth,” 2021).

Health disparities are another impactful factor to healthcare regarding children. Access to healthcare is especially important regarding pediatric care because it can determine outcomes for the rest of that youth's life. Trying to achieve the goal of health equity is essential to ensure that all children have an equal opportunity for healthcare.

Another common reason for global healthcare problems regarding youth is neonatal death shown above. Neonatal death refers to infant death and it is unfathomably high. Neonatal death is so high because of limited access to healthcare and specifically neonatal care. In 2022, 2.3 million infants passed away.

Pediatrics has many global issues relating to it and these are just a few that with research and problem solving can result in children being able to live the life they deserve with the healthcare they deserve.
