Kamryn Lowery - Pediatrics
Pediatrics is the field of medicine dedicated to the care of infants, children, and adolescents. Not only do they provide medical care for those who are already ill, but they also provide preventive services to ensure the health of children. Through wellness check-ups, physical exams, diagnosing illnesses, and prescribing medication, pediatricians work to keep their patients healthy.
The field of pediatrics is especially important due to not only the care they provide, but the support they provide as well. Children are often unable to advocate for themselves, so it is up to their pediatrician to help convey the best choices for treatment to the parents on the patient’s behalf. This relationship of trust ensures that the patient’s well-being is at the center of all decisions made.
Despite its importance, every year the shortage of pediatricians grows into more and more of an issue for the United States. This is due to a variety of reasons, such as burnout, unfilled residency slots, and declining interest among medical students. Because of this shortage, low-income and rural areas may have little to no access to pediatricians, leading to lack of support, and higher cost for families that need to travel to receive proper medical care.
Raising awareness for these issues is one of many solutions to combat this issue. Without pediatricians, a large portion of the country is not being properly cared for. By improving and prioritizing support for pediatricians, we can ensure that all children, infants, and teenagers receive the medical care they deserve.
