We often say, “What would they have to worry about? They are just kids,” not realizing their silent struggles and emotional burdens that are too heavy for their age.

Pediatric mental health focuses on the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of children. Although mental health is just as crucial as physical health, it’s often overlooked. Diseases such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD commonly affect children, shaping their emotional and social development. Mental health significantly impacts children in every aspect, including their thought processes, social interactions, and coping mechanisms.

Symptoms of mental health issues in children include constant headaches and stomachaches, trouble sleeping or eating, social withdrawal, weight loss, and drastic changes in behavior. A child dealing with mental health issues can also show signs of irritability, random outbursts, and poor academic performance. On a more serious level, children struggling with their mental health may talk about death and even harming themselves.

Genetics, family history of mental illness, and trauma, such as abuse, neglect, and loss of a loved one, can make a child vulnerable to mental health issues. Factors such as bullying, academic pressure, and parental conflict can also negatively affect a child’s mental health.

Some common treatments include therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, and play therapy for younger kids. Medications, along with parental support and school counseling services, play a crucial role in improving their emotional well-being.

Mental health support is essential in supporting children’s health and overall well-being.
