Global Healthcare Issues Within Pediatric Oncology

Written by: Evelyn Gratsas

Pediatric Oncology is an extremely important section in the world of global healthcare. It is the specialty branch of medicine which contains two crucial parts within it. Pediatric means the branch of medicine related to the care of children’s health. Furthermore, oncology is defined as the study, treatment and diagnosis of the disease called cancer. The duties of pediatric oncologists are planning and administering cancer treatment to children, as well as taking part in the diagnosis. This role is extremely important since it helps treat the future generation’s cancer and also improves their quality of life.

A major issue within this is the lack of quality cancer registries, including certified pediatric oncologists, in low-income and middle-income countries. Approximately 80% of children diagnosed with cancer live in low-income and middle-income countries, which results in 90% of the deaths related to pediatric cancer. This is determined by the underdiagnosis, high abandonment rates, malnutrition, poor care, and lack of access to curative therapy like chemotherapy. This negatively affects the care that children in low and middle-income countries receive for their cancer battles, and it needs to change.

However, some organizations are taking action to help with this substantial issue. They are working on supporting low-income healthcare settings by removing their financial burdens and providing access to pediatric oncology treatments that will in turn save lives. Organizations are working on donating high-quality medicines for no cost and providing healthcare providers with needed training. With these improvements globally, we can ensure long-lasting change and healthcare equity among children battling cancer.
