Avni Sinha - Neurology
Ranging from disorders such as Alzheimer's disease to Epilepsy and Parkinsons, neurological disorders are a category of conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. These disorders are both quickly and quietly becoming one of the most urgent global health challenges of our time. Neurological disorders are not only the leading cause of disability, they are also the second leading cause of death worldwide. By observing data over the past 30 years, the rates of people dying with disabilities that are neurological show a significant rise; especially in low and middle income countries (LMICs). The rise in deaths suggests that global healthcare advancements in neurology aren't effective enough. This information leads to the realization that urgent measures have to be made in order to improve these horrifying demographics. Some specific statistics recorded are that nearly 80% of people with epilepsy in LMICs do not receive the treatment they need, despite the existence of low-cost medications that can effectively manage the condition. Additionally, over 60% of stroke-related-deaths occur in LMICs, where access to emergency care is limited or nonexistent. These numbers reflect the lack of awareness, training, and infrastructure in many parts of the world. To reduce these disparities, global care must prioritize neurological care and make it more accessible, increase funding for diagnostic tools, and expand education on this matter community-wise. Without immediate intervention, neurological disorders will continue to silently claim lives and burden healthcare systems around the world.
