Exploring Careers: Neurology

Aditi Neekhra

Neurology is an extensive branch of medicine focused on disorders of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. The nervous system is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS, often referred to as the body’s “control center,” consists of the brain and spinal cord. The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of the body, transmitting messages to and from organs and muscles. Neurological disorders arise from dysfunction in either the CNS or PNS.

These conditions are diagnosed through clinical assessments and advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and CT scans. In many cases, the brain’s electrical activity is also monitored using electroencephalograms (EEGs), especially when epilepsy or seizure-related conditions are suspected. Treatment strategies depend on the specific disorder but often involve a combination of medication, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery. In recent years, breakthroughs in medical research have led to the development of innovative therapies, including deep brain stimulation and biologic drugs. These advancements offer hope for patients with chronic neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

Neurology is a dynamic and constantly evolving field that blends knowledge from medicine, neuroscience, and psychology. It requires sharp clinical skills and a deep understanding of how the nervous system affects every part of the body. As research continues, neurologists are better equipped to diagnose and improve the lives of patients with neurological disorders.

Meet the Author:

Hello, my name is Aditi Neekhra. I am a rising junior at South Forsyth High School with a strong passion for neuroscience. In the future, I aspire to become a neurologist and contribute to advancements in the understanding and treatment of neurological disorders. For college, I plan to major in either neuroscience or biochemistry, with a minor in psychology to gain a deeper insight into the connection between the brain and behavior.
