Neurology and global health
Neurological disorders affect over more than 3 billion people worldwide, yet access to diagnosis and treatment remains highly unbalanced. Conditions such as Epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, migraine headache and multiple other neurological disorders that require long term and specialized treatment. Unfortunately, in many low and middle income countries that are financially struggling, neurologists are rarely found due to lack of education, payment, diagnosis tools being very limited, and the taboo surrounding neurological illness is widespread.
For instance, Epilepsy, a highly treatable condition affects nearly 70 million people worldwide, Yet up to 50% of them in developing countries goes untreated due to lack of medication or misdiagnosis or money. Similarly, stroke, a leading cause of death and disability, often goes untreated in many poor countries due to their hospitals lacking CT scans or trained professionals to treat them.
The global issue of neurological disorders is only increasing, especially with aging populations and exposure to environmental risks like pollution and stress.
Neurology isn’t just a study of the brain, it’s about giving people the freedom to live, give them hope and independence. As global citizens we must push for health care system to improve their policies, and help both the poor and people who suffer in silence due to financial issues, those who grew up in a society that made neurological issues a taboo.
