Global healthcare in General Medicine - By Sukhman Garcha

Global health is a versatile field which addresses health issues that focus on improving health and ensuring equal access to healthcare for all individuals worldwide. General Medicine refers to the wide specialty that focuses on the non-surgical diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of diseases and conditions that affect the internal organs. It encompasses internal medicine, including other specialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology.

One global healthcare issue in General Medicine is access to healthcare. There is an inequitable distribution of healthcare services across lower income and higher income countries. There are many social factors impacting this, including education and income. As education is not accessible in many low income countries, individuals don’t know what healthcare services are in general medicine. They are not aware of healthcare services they can access, and the variety of treatments they can choose from, including the costs. Where education is accessible like in higher income countries, individuals are able to access healthcare services whenever they need to. Individuals from higher income countries are educated and have the knowledge to know what healthcare services are accessible to them, with knowing about costs and treatments.

Higher income country individuals are also given many different options for treatment plans, costs, and treatment locations, due to these countries having advanced healthcare systems that are available to all individuals. For higher income countries, as healthcare practices expand and healthcare services are in demand, it is easier for people to access the services. And as more people use the services, doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers are getting paid higher salaries, which allows them to work and improve their service.

As income is low, there is a lack of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers in lower income countries, compared to higher income countries with increasing numbers of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers. Due to the number of employment being small in low income countries, there aren’t as many healthcare practices that are developed, making it harder for millions of people to access healthcare services. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers don’t have enough income or resources to make change and improve their services because they have low salaries.

Overall, global health is an issue that is going to take time and effort to be resolved over time in General Medicine.
