Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that specializes in the care of infants, children and adolescents from birth until young adulthood. Pediatricians require a separate education than that of a doctor because the care of the youth can be vastly different than adults because of their bodies still growing and developing. The duties of pediatricians range from monitoring the changes occurring within the child’s body, administering vaccines at a young age to prevent illnesses, and even providing guidance on nutrition. Pediatrics is a vital part of our society because it creates a specialized field for the youth to guarantee the well-being of the children at their critical stages of development and thus, forming a healthier future generation. However, no matter how crucial this field may be , this field is not prioritized nor funded properly in many hospitals across the world.
Around the world, there is a concerning lack of focus on pediatrics and a severe shortage of available pediatricians.
For example, in sub-Saharan Africa it’s stated by the World Health Organization, that there is less than one pediatrician per 100,000 kids in a majority of the regions. These statistics should be much more alarming than how it is described because along with this comes an increase in infant mortality rates.
This is because the body undergoes heavy changes as we get older. When we are younger we typically are much more fragile and require special needs based on our developmental stage because of the impacts it has on our emotional and behavioral well-being. Additionally, vital organs and arteries are located in different regions in an adult’s body when compared to an adolescent’s. For instance, if you attempted to put pressure on a child’s punctured carotid artery to stop the bleeding, based on general healthcare for adults, you would end up suffocating the child. This is because the carotid artery is located around the side of the neck in an adult and when applying pressure on the same region for a child you will end up blocking their airway because for a child it is located around the center. This is one of many underlying differences between general healthcare and pediatrics. Unfortunately in various countries, like India, this distinction is not emphasized and society relies on general healthcare for adults to cover everything. This causes a greater infant mortality rate and a lower standard of living for the next generation because the healthcare system isn’t prioritizing the proper and different care children require.
Kids are the apples that fall from the tree. The real question is who is there to catch them?
Hi! I am Mohammed Arnob and currently I am a Sophmore in highschool, attending Stuyvesant High School. I have always naturally been interested in S.T.E.M related fields and it wasn’t until my baby sister came along that I sincerely grew a deep passion in Pediatrics.
I’ve been given lots of gifts with a loving family who supports my interests and a roof over my head. I want to be able to use these to ,at minimum, help kids lead a normal life where they can express themselves and do what they want. I'm working hard towards these goals and I’m only gonna keep working harder to go on to do great things.
