Pediatric surgery faces critical global healthcare challenges that limit essential healthcare treatment for children worldwide. A major issue is the wide gap in life-saving surgical access between high-income and low-income countries. In low-income regions, children lack access to essential surgical care due to the limited healthcare infrastructure, insufficient medical training, and significant financial constraints. Across the globe, it can be found that at least 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable, and reliable surgical care, with children in low-resource settings particularly vulnerable.
Additionally, another problem is that pediatric surgeons are lacking in many parts of the world, leading to delays or improper treatment of life-threatening conditions like infections and trauma. Outcomes are often much more complicated due to poor postoperative care, sanitary restrictions, and a lack of proper anesthesia, which increase the risk of mortality and long-term disabilities. The lack of sanitation in many parts of the world, especially in hospitals and medical environments, leads to increased rates of infection and problems after surgery.
Improving global pediatric surgery is a big issue around the world. Investment in medical infrastructure, specialized training for healthcare providers, and sustainable healthcare policies that prioritize children's surgical needs will benefit societies and bring awareness to the difficulties children face every day in the healthcare world. International collaboration and advocacy for equal healthcare access can bridge this widening gap, ensuring that every child has the chance to live and to receive life-saving surgical care regardless of their geographic or economic situation.
Meet the author:
Hi! My name is Hannah Girling, Im 15 and live in New York! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatric surgeon, driven by my passion to help others, especially kids. I love science and learning about how everything works, from your body, to the environment and everything in between. Im currently part of a 3-year science research program where I will be doing independent research with a focus on pediatric cancer. Additionally, im part of my town's ambulance corps, involved in DECA, and im on the student council. I also love sports and have been on the varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse teams since 8th grade. I love challenging myself both academically and physically—I exercise almost every day and always strive to push my limits. My goal is to learn as much as I can, make a difference in the world, and, of course, keep smiling and enjoying life through every step of the journey!
