Access to essential medicines around the world
In many parts of the world—nearly one-third of the global population—essential medicines remain out of reach. Not because they don’t exist, but because they’re simply unavailable or inaccessible to millions. The main issue is accessibility. This crisis worsens each day with inflation, and many people can no longer afford life-saving treatments.
In wealthier nations, pharmaceutical companies continue to raise prices, turning chronic illness into a lifelong financial burden.
Another major concern is availability. In conflict zones and remote areas, medications often don’t make it to hospitals or pharmacies due to broken supply chains, political instability, or poor infrastructure.
Global organizations like the World Health Organization have created lists of essential drugs that every country should provide. But for many, these lists remain more of an ideal than a reality due to lack of funding, weak healthcare systems, and limited global cooperation.
Access to medicine should be a human right, not a privilege. Solving this crisis means lowering drug costs, supporting local production, and holding governments and pharmaceutical companies accountable. This must change—because no matter where someone lives or what their situation is, everyone deserves the chance to heal.
