 Neurology: Brain Health Adversities Globally

The study of the brain and nervous system, Neurology, is advancing in the fields of healthcare rapidly. The increase in advancement has caused many significant global challenges. With the increase of neurological disorders, the global healthcare teams must respond more effectively and efficiently. The World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, stated that over 16% of diseases were associated with neurological disorders.

A challenge faced worldwide is the accessibility of healthcare. In areas of low to middle income, the infrastructure for neurological services is practically omitted. The specialties and diagnostic tools related to neurology are also very bounded and limited. The most leading cause of disability and death, a stroke, requires lots of immediate attention yet in some countries patients don’t have the access to the necessary care they need.

Another factor that needs imperative action globally is research.  While there are many fundamental developments in the understanding of the brain, neurological research lingers behind in comparison to other medical fields. For example, multiple sclerosis and Alzeimers disease have no named cure, even though both diseases have a serious impact on families. Despite the advancements in medical technology, there remains a significant gap in effective neurological treatments. In addition, many neurological diseases don’t receive the same level of investment as cardiovascular diseases and cancer do. Such diseases receive a lot more public attention and private funding.

By investing more in healthcare infrastructure, promoting awareness, and increasing research funding, especially in neurology studies, we can ensure that no one is left behind in the physical and mental fight against neurological diseases.
