Obstetrics: Why is Prenatal Care  Important?

Obstetrics is a branch in the medical field that is centered around the care of women during all stages of pregnancy,

childbirth, and during postpartum. Obstetricians are highly skilled doctors who provide care to both the mother

and the baby to ensure their safety. Obstetricians can also treat and manage  issues that arise before, during,

or after pregnancy.



Childbirth is a crucial and life changing part of many women’s lives which can be scary for some. It is important

to have someone to support and guide them through this critical time. Obstetricians can detect complications in

pregnancies early on which creates a safer environment for the mother and the child. By performing checkups,

ultrasounds, and tests, obstetricians give families the best possible start to raising their child. It can be dangerous

to not have prenatal care because potentially life threatening complications could go undetected.

Some complications include learning disabilities, fetal growth issues, preeclampsia, and anemia among

many other issues. When a mother does not get prenatal care, the odds are not in her favor; her baby is

five times more likely to die compared to mothers who received prenatal care. The infant is also three times

more likely to be born at a low birth weight and seven times more likely to be born premature. This is why going

to an obstetrician is so crucial. There are also many upsides and exciting parts of seeing an obstetrician at prenatal

appointments such as hearing the heartbeat and finding out the sex of the baby. Prenatal appointments also offer

education for new parents to help make the transition to parenthood smoother. Obstetricians prepare women for

birth and motherhood, making them true heroes.
