 Pulmonology

What is it?

Pulmonology is the diagnosis, and critical care and prevention of diseases that stem in the lungs and other areas of the respiratory system. A pulmonologist uncovers many different forms of diseases, whether it’s acute conditions such as pneumonia, and bronchitis, or fatal, life threatening conditions such as cancers and irreversible conditions and damage such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Some pulmonologists narrow down their career to handling only specific fields of aid, which is called a subspecialty. One of these doctors will, for an example, only work on interstitial lung diseases and wouldn’t handle any other patients with unrelated issues.

Diagnosis/treatment

Once collecting a good thorough medical history, symptom description, and performing a physical exam, they would, if necessary, perform many different types of procedures as needed, such as diagnostic tests (CT scans, X-rays), blood work, bronchoscopies, and so much more. They then will make patients treatment plans which can vary between simple medications, rehabilitation, and even lifelong treatment plans.

How long does it take to become a Pulmonologist?

In order to become a pulmonologist, you need to start by receiving your bachelor’s degree, and pass the medical college admissions test which determines if you are eligible to participate in medical school. You must complete a 3-year residency program specializing in internal medicine and then an additional 2-year fellowship in pulmonology disease. After all those years, they would have an option in becoming certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. If one wishes to become board certified in pulmonary disease and critical care, a 3-year fellowship is required that covers both areas. In total it could take between 9 to 12 years to become a pulmonologist.
